Four more long-term care homes have seen workers walk off the job. The Canadian Union of Public Employees says those workers join the more than 2,400 employees already on the picket line. While essential services inside the homes continue, nurses, continuing-care assistants, housekeeping staff, as well as physiotherapists, occupational therapists and recreational therapists are also off the job. The province and the union have been at loggerheads over wages, recruitment, and retaining staff, leading to a breakdown in contract negotiations. Nova Scotia’s long-term care minister says the province has offered pay increases of 12 per cent over four years, and some employees would see a wage bump of 24 per cent.
