Students across the South Shore, will soon learn more about career opportunities in Nova Scotia’s seafood industry through a new classroom initiative launched by the provincial government. The Coast to Classroom program has been announced by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. The program is designed for students in Grades 7 through 12 and aims to highlight career paths available in Nova Scotia’s coastal communities. Beginning this fall, students will learn about coastal ecosystems, sustainable fishing, and the many jobs connected to the seafood sector. The initiative comes as the industry prepares for future labour shortages. A 2024 report estimated Canada’s seafood sector will need more than 7,000 new workers by 2030 due to retirements and continued industry growth.
